Older-ized Rugrats by JelloArms Older-ized Rugrats by JelloArms
I was watching the Rugrats the other night (yes, I am 22 years old and I STILL watch it. Only the old episodes though, from 1991-1994) and I was like, man I really want to draw older-ized versions of them! So I did. I realize the show All Grown Up already older-ized the Rugrats but I never really liked that show so I made up new clothing designs. Just like the spin off All Grown Up however, I still chose to age them 10 years into the future.

Before anyone asks, I REFUSE to draw Dil and Kimmie. I hate them. Dil pretty much killed the show. Kimmie just buried it.

:bulletgreen:There seems to be a popular pairing of Lil and Tommy here on Dev. so I just went with it. Lil has a crush on Tommy and Tommy has no idea what to think!

:bulletred:I drew Phil holding a jar of butterflies because in the cartoon, he was always talking about eating worms and whatnot. I figure being really into entymology would be the older-ized version of worm obsession.

:bulletgreen:I couldn't resist giving Chuckie a Game Boy Color. The Rugrats came out in 1991 and Chuckie was like 2, making him 12ish in 2001. Although the Game Boy Advanced had come out, I was still playing my good old Game Boy color up until the end of that year.

:bulletred:I don't like the way I drew Angelica. She reminds me of that blonde girl from the Burger King Kids Club. Only 90's kids will know what I'm talking about. Yes, that is a bluetooth btw.

I like this take on All Growed Up

I like the way you drew Tommy, he's the best looking of all the characters in your picture, and my most favorite of the Rugrats/All Grown Up Characters.

I don't blame you for refusing to draw Dil and Kimi, I mean I like them but don't do what you're not comfortable doing. I hated the whole male fairy pregnancy thing on Fairly Odd Parents and I refuse to draw pregnant males, even fairies, I draw female faires being pregnant (I've so far only drawn Wanda, I'm yet to get to the other girl Fairies).

Favoriting this.

Someone probably already told you this but the blonde girl in the Burger King Kids Club is Snap. I wonder what happened to those BK Kids Club kids. I was born in 85.

This is an awesome picture and that gameboy makes me nostalgic.

Adding new character's wasn't what screwed up the show, as can be seen in the case of Susie. I love the episodes where Susie and Angelica went at it. Adding new characters who drag down the show (Dill) or for the sake of adding a character (Kimmie) was the problem. This is more of a writing issue than anything else.
1. This is a cartoon of *talking* babies, why isn't Dill talking even if it is more primitive baby talk?
2. Dill could have been a source of karma for Tommy. With the way Tommy kept getting the babies into trouble and then blowing off Chuckie's concerns. Wouldn't if it had been great if Dill became like Tommy and then Tommy has to start seeing things from Chuckie's POV? This would have been a great source of character development for Tommy by having him play Mr. Responsible.

Although, I think by the Rugrats movie the show had its run, and they should have done the time skip.

Love the picture! Nice attention to detail!
Honestly, I kind of liked it when they added Dil, but I think he was probably retarded. I mean, all the other babies, including the ones at the hospital when he was born, can talk, but he can't. As for Kimi... well, yeah. After that, I lost all interest. For me, it wasn't so much the character, though - it was more the changes she brought to the series AND that whole movie. The entire Rugrats in Paris movie seemed to be sending the message that anyone with a single parent couldn't ever be happy, with the whole thing about Chuckie trying to get a mom. I understand why he'd want one, but I always liked the earlier episodes where he realized he didn't need one because he had his dad.
Anyway, I'm ranting, sorry. Still love the picture! :D

I love the original rugrats! Although I have no problems with Kimi or Dil, the earlier episodes are infinitely better. :3 I love the detail in accordance to their original looks. Chuckie's bracelet/watch whatever especially. :p

This obvious is the original five, prior to Susie (and especially Hsrold and Savannah [called Samantha in "All Grow'd Up"]). And seriously, if you think Chuck's creepy, Angie seems to have a horse-face complextion, which is odd, because truly, looks are one of the things The Queen of Mean excelled at keeping flawless.

Why do you hate Dil and Kimmie?
I am just asking, I think Dil is a person that the show could be with out and Kimmie well she I don't know so much about but I dislike her because I think if she is japanese she should have a japanese name.
But that is what I think...

Dil was just annoying to no end and from the moment he went on air, although Tommy was still adventurous, a lot of the shows involved him having to take care of his brother. Also, the poopie jokes were just damn unfunny. Kimmie made Chuckie a lot braver which for me, killed some of his charm.

From observing the world now as a grown adult and from the eyes of many an adult during that time period, it was well apparent that the babies were misinformed in what they perceived.

But from a toddler's standpoint--which was how the show was written--what the Rugrats said and did would make sense, however incorrect it would seem (and is).

Still, incorrect or not, without the babies' imaginations running wild during "normal" situations and without them perceiving the world different than any regular person, the show wouldn't have had the success it did, because the show thrived on adventures from the perspective of a misguided toddler.

So, when Tommy--the leader of the original gang and the one to start off all the adventures--began to be tied down via his responsibilites as a big brother to drooling "poop" joke factory Dil, newcomer Kimi--Chuckie's step-sibling, initially from Rugrats In Paris--tried to fill the gap by stepping into the leadership role.

Sadly, because Kimi was new and lacked the supposed knowledge and experience the other Rugrats had already undertaken, her so-called "adventures" were nowhere near the quality of Tommy's, which in turn--along with competition from hugely popular-for-no-apparent-reason Spongebob-"I-Am-Only-Funny-Because-I-Am-a-Moron"-Squarepants and the poor ratings from the relatively recent All Grown Up spin-off series that tried to age the Rugrats but still keep the charm--killed the franchise as it stands.

And therefore, with its premiere franchise essentially on its last legs and Nickelodeon's selfish executives taking all profits from each Nicktoon made, the company behind the entire shebang (Klasky-Csupo) is practically bankrupt and living off of direct-to-DVD Rugrats fairy tale stories that supposedly take place chronologically "before the end" of the franchise.
